Finding out about soil

This activity involves discussion and the sharing of ideas to identify and explain what you may find within soil. It provides children with the opportunity to explore first hand and refine their observation skills.

Pupils will learn what soil is and what they may find inside soil samples. They will be able to use their senses to describe soils and then explore using magnifying glasses and microscopes, learning that soil contains water and air and a range of solid materials. Following on from this, the children will be able to consider how soil is formed.

Topics covered include parts of soil, comparing soil and soil formation.
