How strong are plants?
Resource
This activity involves children planting bean seeds which have been covered by different materials to find out whether the bean shoots will be able to lift or break through the different materials. Pupils will learn that bean shoots are strong enough to lift or push through all three materials suggested. There is a good opportunity for pupils to question their knowledge of plant growth and develop fair tests. Cross-curricular links can be made with Art and D&T.
Plaster of Paris as a laboratory chemical presents no significant risks but for safety reasons please refer to CLEAPSS sheet PS 72 before use.
