Primary Numbers in Plants – Amaryllis flowers

Resource

Throughout Autumn and Winter, you can buy Amaryllis bulbs in the shops. All you have to do is water them each week and keep them warm (minimum 20oC). You should have gone from bulb to bloom in 6 to 8 weeks.

This activity that can be carried out by individuals or as a whole class is designed to take a few weeks. With cross-curricular links in mathematics, pupils are able to develop their data handling skills, draw graphs, consider shape and symmetry as well as hone their observation skills. The Teaching Notes provides guidance on how to care for the Amaryllis and the Pupil Sheet can be used for pupils to record their results and their observations.

This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to see plant growth in real time and provides an opportunity to practise using scientific vocabulary and consolidate their knowledge of plant growth and parts of a plant.
